K-Tourism Island Ulleungdo
A Place You Want to Visit in Korea,
What is the K-Tourism Island Development Project?
What is the K-Tourism Island Development Project?
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has selected five islands, including Ulleungdo (Ulleung-gun), Geomundo (Yeosu), Maldo, Myeongdo, Bangchukdo (Gunsan), Baengnyeongdo (Ongjin), and Heuksando (Shinan). Over four years, the government will invest approximately 10 billion KRW per island to transform these places into ‘K-Tourism Islands’—tourist attractions that people from all over the world will want to visit.

This project aims to merge tourism with K-culture on these islands, which are low-density and pristine tourist destinations, in line with the growing trend of travel focused on relaxation and experiences. Local communities will collaborate to create unique, charming island experiences.
Challenges and Directions of the K-Tourism Island Ulleungdo Development Project
Ulleungdo possesses unique and distinctive content, such as its rich ecology, youth culture, and indigenous traditions, that set it apart. Through the K-Tourism Island initiative, we aim to create new experiences and value for travelers to Ulleungdo, enhancing its competitiveness not only within Korea but also as a leading global island destination.
Developing a Unique and Sustainable Ecological Island
We aim to reveal the hidden natural wonders of Ulleungdo that have yet to be discovered, while establishing a sustainable framework for accommodating tourists.
Developing an Island for the Youth, Where Passions and Interests Lead to Travel Experiences
We strive to train professional tourism personnel within Ulleung-gun to build a self-sustaining tourism foundation for Ulleungdo.
Developing an Island of Joy that Preserves Ulleungdo's Unique Culture
We aim to create a cultural island where visitors can explore the preserved alleys and meet the people of Ulleungdo, experiencing its authentic culture and cuisine.
Vision & Mission
Ulleungdo is an island with a 141-year history of settlement, where only 10% of the original inhabitants remain.
We aim to highlight its fading unique ecology and culture through the K-Tourism Island initiative, bringing them into clearer focus.
Traveling to Ulleungdo offers a chance to experience the value of its rare natural ecosystem and fosters an attitude of respect for its indigenous culture.
Together with young travelers, we will create an Ulleungdo travel experience like no other before.
